With catchy tunes and powerful pipes, Dublin singer proves Ireland's got soul

귀에 감기는 선율과 파워풀한 목소리, 아일랜드 더블린에서 소울을 노래하다.

Being different has always worked to Laura Izibor's advantage. As one of the few black singers in Dublin, she was the go-to warm-up act when soul artists came to town. "My manager read the paper one morning and saw that James Brown was coming, but he didn't have an opener," says Izibor, 21, whose husky croon and spunky, piano-powered songs have earned her comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Alicia Keys.

로라 이자이버는 흔히 찾아볼 수 없는 경력의 가수이다. 몇 안 되는 아일랜드 더블린의 흑인 가수로 소울 아티스트들이 더블린을 방문했을 때 오프닝 무대에 서면서 경력을 쌓았다. 올해 21살인 이자이버는 허스키한 목소리와 피아노가 돋보이는 곡들로 아레사 프랭클린과 알리시아 키스에 비교되곤 한다. “어느 아침에 제 매니저가 ‘*제임스 브라운이 공연을 위해 오는데 오프닝 무대에 설 가수가 없다’ 고 했어요.”

* 미국 소울의 대부, 펑키음악의 선구자이신 제임스 브라운, 1933년 출생, 2006년 크리스마스에 폐렴으로 안타깝게 사망(같은 해에 한국에서 공연을 가지기도 했었습니다.) 그 유명한 'I Feel Good'의 주인공.

 

 

"He rang me in class and said, 'Laura, I need you to get off school early. You're supporting James Brown tonight.' " Years before sharing a stage with the Godfather of Soul, Izibor was singing homemade love songs into a karaoke machine.

“매니저가 수업 중에 전화해서 ‘로라, 오늘 학교 조퇴해야겠어. 오늘 저녁에 제임스 브라운의 공연에서 노래해야겠는데..’ 라고 하는 거여요” 그렇게 소울의 대부와 무대를 갖게 된 그녀는 몇 해 전만 해도 노래방에서 달콤한 사랑 노래를 즐겨 부르던 소녀였다.

At 15, she entered an Irish song competition with a tune called "Are We Compatible" and won. The recognition helped her score a record deal, and at 17 she quit school to work on her debut, Let the Truth Be Told. (Her Shine EP is available on iTunes now; the LP drops in 2009.)

15살에 그녀는 아일랜드노래 경연대회에 참가하여 "Are We Compatible"로 입상한다. 그로 인해 레코드 취입을 하게 되고, 17살에는 학교를 그만두고 ‘Let the Truth Be Told’로 데뷔한다.

 

With its you-go-girl pop ("Shine"), slow-rolling funk ("Yes [I'll Be Your Baby]") and gospel-tinged ballads ("Mmm"), Truth is a sunny, chick-flick-worthy take on vintage soul. No wonder Al Green likes it: The Reverend flirted with Izibor when she opened for him in Dublin last year. "He started wiggling a champagne bottle at me," she says. "His manager said, 'Al wants to meet you — would you like to go in his dressing room?' Half of me was like, 'I hope he's not a pervert.' And the other half was like, 'I don't care — it's Al Green!' ‘Let the Truth Be Told’ 는 빈티지 소울을 기반으로 유고걸 팝(“샤인”), 느슨한 훵크(“예스 [아일 비 유어 베이비]”) 와 가스펠 스타일의 발라드(“으음”) 등 다양한 음악을 담고 있다. 이자이버는 지난해 더블린에서 열린 *알 그린의 공연에서 오프닝을 맡았다. 알 그린 또한 그녀의 팬이라고 한다. “제 매니저가 ‘알 그린 아저씨가 저를 만나고 싶으니, 의상실로 와 달라’고 했다는 거여요. 속으로 변태 아저씨 같다는 생각이 들었지만 머 어때요? 알 그린을 만날 수 있잖아요.” 니콜 프레씨
